See the art on your wall

Before choosing a format, it helps to understand what each wall asks for. This guide gathers the measurements the studio uses in its consulting; just below, the free visualization of the work in your own space.

What size artwork is right for your wall

The studio’s rule: the work occupies 60% to 75% of the width of the free wall or of the furniture beneath it, and the center of the image sits between 145 and 150 cm from the floor, at eye level.

  1. Intimate

    60 cm

  2. Studio

    70 cm

  3. Gallery

    100 cm

  4. Collector

    125 cm

  5. Statement

    160 cm

  6. Opulence

    220 cm

The six categories to scale, compared with one another. The numbers are the average of each category across the collection, measured on the longer side: they are there to give you the dimension, not to promise an exact size. Each series has its own ladder, and the format of a given category varies from work to work.

Proportion: two thirds of the wall

A small work on a large wall disappears; a large work on a small wall suffocates. The balance sits between 60% and 75% of the free width, and the most common mistake is falling below that. On a 3 meter wall with no furniture, the calculation calls for a work of 180 to 225 cm on the longer side. In rooms with high ceilings, the eye accepts the upper end of the range.

Above the sofa, the bed and the sideboard

When there is furniture beneath it, the furniture rules, not the wall: the work follows 60% to 75% of the furniture’s width and sits centered on it. A 2.20 m sofa calls for a work of 130 to 165 cm on the longer side; a 1.60 m queen bed calls for 95 to 120 cm; a 1.20 m sideboard calls for 70 to 90 cm. Between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the work there are 15 to 25 cm of breathing room.

Height: the center 145 cm from the floor

Museum height places the center of the work between 145 and 150 cm from the floor, the average eye level of a standing viewer. It applies to free walls, halls and corridors. Above furniture the calculation changes: what rules is the 15 to 25 cm of breathing room above the backrest or the headboard, even if the center rises a little. In groupings of several works, the 145 cm applies to the center of the whole grouping, never to each piece.

The six format categories

Each work is produced in a closed scale of formats, with names that recur across the entire collection. The ladder is relative to each image: the Statement of a panorama is not the same measurement as the Statement of a portrait, and not every work offers all six categories. The ranges below are the usual ones across the collection, measured on the longer side of the work, and they stand as a reference, never as a table: each series has its own ladder, and the exact size of a given category changes from work to work, above and below, according to the proportion of the image. The room visualizations beside each category are AI-generated and serve as a visual reference.

  1. Room visualization of a work in the Intimate format, up to 60 cm on the longer side.

    Intimate

up to 60 cm on the longer side

The same museum-grade printing and materials, in the smallest format of the house. Ideal to rest on shelves, sideboards and bedside tables, or to compose groupings of several works on a single wall.

  2. Room visualization of a work in the Studio format, from 55 to 90 cm on the longer side.

    Studio

from 55 to 90 cm on the longer side

The first wall format. Perfect for smaller walls, entryways, corridors and powder rooms, where a strong image turns a space of passage into a pause.

  3. Room visualization of a work in the Gallery format, from 75 to 120 cm on the longer side.

    Gallery

from 75 to 120 cm on the longer side

The classic exhibition format, the same one many galleries choose for their walls. Versatile by nature: it suits with balance most medium walls in living rooms, bedrooms and offices.

  4. Room visualization of a work in the Collector format, from 100 to 150 cm on the longer side.

    Collector

from 100 to 150 cm on the longer side

Asserted presence without dominating the room. Ideal for larger walls, above sideboards and medium to large furniture, or as a single piece above double and queen beds.

  5. Room visualization of a work in the Statement format, from 140 to 180 cm on the longer side.

    Statement

from 140 to 180 cm on the longer side

The reference edition of each work: the format in which the image was conceived to exist in its fullest expression, in more restricted editions. Made for wide walls, king headboards, rooms with generous ceilings and corporate settings that call for a visual anchor.

  6. Room visualization of a work in the Opulence format, above 200 cm on the longer side.

    Opulence

above 200 cm on the longer side

The most extravagant format of the house, reserved for a few works of very high resolution. Above two meters, produced to be the absolute center of a room. Truly opulent.

Simulate the work in your space

The studio prepares, free of charge and with no commitment, a visualization of your chosen work placed in your space. The simulation uses best effort and the AI technology available: the result is approximate and may contain scale errors, at times significant; for that reason, the more measurements of the same room you send, the more faithful the approximation becomes.

How it works: choose your room’s infographic below, take the indicated measurements, photograph the wall straight on and send everything through the form or directly on the team’s WhatsApp. The visualization returns within 7 business days, with a format recommendation for your space.

Frequently asked questions about artwork size

What is the right height to hang a picture?

The center of the work sits between 145 and 150 cm from the floor, the average eye level of a standing viewer. It is the reference used in museums and galleries and applies to free walls, halls and corridors. Above a sofa or a headboard, what rules is the 15 to 25 cm of breathing room between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the work.

What size artwork above a sofa?

From 60% to 75% of the sofa’s width, centered on it. A 2 meter sofa calls for a work of 120 to 150 cm on the longer side; a 2.50 m one calls for 150 to 185 cm. The bottom of the work sits 15 to 25 cm above the backrest.

What size artwork for a 3 meter wall?

On a free 3 meter wall, the work occupies 180 to 225 cm on the longer side: the territory of the Statement and Opulence categories. If there is furniture against the wall, the calculation is made on the furniture’s width, not the wall’s.

What is the ideal artwork size for a living room?

The living room usually holds the widest wall of the house, between 2.5 and 3.5 free meters, which calls for a work of 150 to 260 cm on the longer side. Above a sofa or a sideboard, the calculation is the furniture’s and the range drops to 120 to 180 cm. In living rooms, the most common mistake is choosing a work that is too small.

What size artwork above a bed?

From 60% to 75% of the bed’s width, centered on it. A 1.40 m double bed calls for 85 to 105 cm on the longer side; a 1.60 m queen calls for 95 to 120 cm; a 1.93 m king calls for 115 to 145 cm. Above the headboard there are 15 to 25 cm of breathing room.

One large piece or several small ones?

A single work in a generous format has more presence than several small pieces scattered around, and it is the path the studio recommends for the main wall of a room. A grouping of several works performs better in smaller formats, in the Intimate category, and should be treated as one block: it is the center of the whole grouping that sits at eye level.
